New Writing Practice

I used to fill my head with information for days on end—text, videos, even memes—waiting for something to push me to write. “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings,” wrote William Wordsworth during his own revolutionary period. From Wordsworth and other Romantic poets, especially Whitman and Ginsberg, I learned to throw myself into the politics of the times, the history that’s happening all around me. Pay attention, said my masters, and poetry will come.

Feeling Tired: a note #njpoet

I’m feeling tired tonight, run down, yawning through conversations. My eyes have been drooping all afternoon.  

The great news, my blood pressure is finally coming down—thanks to the medication, I suppose. But as my friend Luke insists, it’s probably the result of a combination of changes I’ve been making.

Since Summer Unemployment Started

Since summer unemployment started, I’ve been falling back into old writing habits—freewriting into notebooks, stories and poems. But I’ve also been trying to read outside my comfort zone, outside my area of study—trade magazines, automotive how-to books, even military survival manuals.

Someone asked me once what it is that compels me to write. My answer came out before I could couch it with platitudes, and before I could hide it under a veil of arrogance: “It’s the only thing I’ve ever done that I completely suck at.” It’s true. I am a truly crappy writer. Thankfully, most days, the only one who knows that is me.
