I told him that since my best friend died suddenly, shocking me, I’ve come to feel, in my bones, how finite my life is. I’ve come to appreciate how little time I have. And, I added, in the light of that visceral gut level shock of a realization—the shit you understand when you see your best friend’s blood all over the floor—when his heart explodes: after that, small talk is .. well, fuck small talk. I have no time, no patience for niceties, chit-chat, TV shows et al. I told him all of this, my doctor, calmly. I didn’t even raise my voice. He said I might have a personality disorder.
